Scented Pelargoniums
Also (incorrectly and more commonly) known as scented geraniums. While they are in the Geraniaceae family they are not in the same genus as a true geranium which is why we prefer to use the proper nomenclature.
They are perhaps best known for their fragrant foliage which was commonly used in Victorian times for bouquets, potpourris, aromatherapy and to flavor jellies & desserts. They'd often reside in parlors and foyers and be ruffled up just before guests arrived to fill the air with a strong and powerful fragrance. Nowadays, there are hundreds of named cultivars all with different scents, foliage types, and flowers.
Requirements & Care: Some species and cultivars are hardier than others but most are somewhat tender and we prefer to grow our scented pelargoniums in containers and bring them inside for the winter just to be sure they'll come back for us again in the spring. If you are determined on planting them in the ground, an area with full sun, good drainage, and some protections from wind such as near a building or fence will greatly improve their chances of survival. We know many people who have them planted out in their yards in various areas that have a high success rate of overwintering - it just depends on your individual microclimate and garden.
