Common Names: African daisy, grousblom


A genus of around 70 species of annuals and perennials with daisy-like flowers that open and close with the sun. Some species have been used in traditional medicine.


Distribution: dry, stony slopes in Southern Africa

Common name(s): cape daisy, monarch of the veld


Description: perennial (only if protected); a South African species that blooms virtually nonstop throughout the summer and into autumn. Many cultivars have been bred for varying flower colors and types but our stock was originally purchased as just different color variations of the species. Our red-flowered form has gray-green foliage and an upright, rounded growth habit. Flowers will open and close with the sun. Dead-heading will promote new blooms, but is not necessary.


Height: to 2 ft. Spread: to 2 ft.


Position: full sun and well-draining soil


Uses: ornamental, cut flowers


Winter Hardiness: to 30 F and below

Common name(s): cape daisy, monarch of the veld


Description: perennial (only if protected); a South African species that blooms virtually nonstop throughout the summer and into autumn. Many cultivars have been bred for varying flower colors and types but our stock was originally purchased as just different color variations of the species. Our tangerine-flowered form is low and spreading into a dense mound of foliage. Flowers will open and close with the sun. Dead-heading will promote new blooms, but is not necessary.
