Common Names: saltbushes, orach
A genus of approximately 250 diverse and widely distributed species that includes annuals, herbaceous perennials, and shrubs. Many species are edible and have used as a food source by humans since neolithic times. A. hortensis is still popular as a leaf vegetable and several species are cultivated as ornamentals.
Distribution: worldwide in a variety of habitats.

Description: evergreen shrub; upright, sprawling growth with angular silver leaves. Edible leaves are high in nutrients, minerals, proteins and electrolytes. Greyish flowers in summer. Also used as a feed plant for livestock and as a medicine by some Bedouin tribes.
