A genus of 11 accepted species of evergreen shrubs and small trees. Several species, particulary A. microphylla and A. serrata are commonly cultivated as ornamentals.
Distribution: temperate and subtropical regions of South America from Southern Brazil and Southern Bolivia south into Argentina and Chile.

Description: evergreen tree/shrub; relatively quick, upright growth with small glossy, dark green leaves. Small yellow flowers in early spring emit a fragrance reminiscent of vanilla candy.
