Common Names: California lilacs, wild lilacs
A genus that includes around 60 species. Most are evergreen shrubs with abundant clusters of small, often fragrant flowers ranging in color from white to many shades of deep blue and violet. They are an important food source for many pollinators as well as other wildlife species. Several species have been used in traditional medicine and many species and hybrids are cultivated as ornamentals.
Distribution: North and Central America (around 42 species are endemic to the California Floristic Province)
