Cistus atriplicifolius

Common name(s): rockrose

Description: evergreen shrub; a species found only in Spain and Morocco. Upright growth and unique, silver-gray foliage and bright yellow flowers in spring. Occasionally sets a second, less abundant flush of flowers in autumn. One of the most stunning rockroses for its foliage alone. Requires near-perfect drainage to thrive, can take foliar damage during extended temperatures below 20 F.

Height: to 4 ft. Spread: to 3 ft.

Position: full sun and lean, well-draining soil

Uses: ornamental

Winter Hardiness: to 10 F and below

Drought: adapted to 5 months of summer drought

Distribution: Spain, Morocco

Care: tip-pruning after flowering (especially in the first couple of years) will result in a more attractive, compact plant. Cistus generally won't tolerate or regenerate from hard pruning of older, woody growth.
