Description: evergreen shrub; a 2016 introduction by Downderry Nursery of Kent, England and named by British television actor, Ian Lavender. Gray-green foliage and fragrant, purple-blue flower spikes on mid-length stems.

 

Height: to 2 ft. Spread: to 3 ft.


Stem length: 8-10 in.  

Corolla: mid violet with blue-violet centers

Calyx: dark violet, sage green at the base

Bloom season: early summer

Best Uses: landscaping, culinary, bouquets, potpourri, crafts


Position: full sun and well-draining soil


Winter Hardiness: to 0 F and below


Drought: adapted to 3 months of summer drought

Notes: 'Purple Treasue' is a byproduct of a 2000-2003 polyploid breeding program that was designed to develop new cultivars that were both high-yielding and produced high-quality oil. The program also resulted in the development of several garden-worthy plants of which 'Purple Treasure' was one. One of its original parents was 'Folgate'.
