Common name(s): creeping red thyme


Description: mat-forming with small, dark green leaves and dark crimson flowers with darker crimson centers in summer. 


Height: to 4 in. Spread: to 2 ft.


Position: full sun and well-draining soil


Uses: ornamental- as a small scale groundcover or between pavers, to attract pollinators


Winter Hardiness: to 0 F and below

Note: the Coccineus group was created due to the presence of multiple variable clones of T. serpyllum 'Coccineus' (creeping red thyme) being sold throughout the trade. Being that the original clone of Thymus serpyllum 'Coccineus' was availiable as early as 1889 by Backhouse of York, it is impossible to distinguish from clones introduced since; thus the use of a cultivar group has been in effect since 2001.
